The Whites Room is a collaboration born out of years of running, hiking, climbing, and skiing in New Hampshire’s White Mountains…not to mention, driving to them.

Possessing a very particular set of skills—skills acquired over a variety of careers in guiding, the outdoor industry, and writing—The Whites Room aims to bring the mountains to you, offering everything from stories from the mountains to informative articles to highlighting the gear we love and use.

Our in-house authors:

Tim Peck

A former child model, Tim spent a portion of his youth gracing the pages of Sunday paper advertisements for many now-defunct department stores. Living responsibility/rent-free with his parents into his thirties, Tim pursued climbing, skiing, and biking while accumulating an impressive amount of time in the mountains…and an equal amount of time in front of his computer writing about it.

Now almost grown up, Tim lives in Concord, New Hampshire, with his wife, two cats, and two Australian shepherds — and has expanded his writing portfolio to include more professional (indoor) content. Relentlessly pursuing the dream, Tim's modest life ambitions are to ski all 12 months of the year, to climb 5.12, and to live and work in an Airstream while traversing the country.

Doug Martland

Doug is an avid skier, climber, and trail runner. He’s an AMGA Apprentice Rock and Alpine Guide, an AMGA certified Single Pitch Instructor, a guide for the EMS Climbing School, and a Wilderness EMT. He claims the very unofficial record for most known laps on his favorite moderate routes at his home crag, the Quincy Quarries’ White and Black Knight.

Extreme Mickey Spades is an avid adventurer who began his career in the outdoors at Eastern Mountain Sports at the early age of 15—ironically, Tim was the person to hire him. Mike, has since moved on to work for BIC Sport North America. Over the years Mike has taken part in many outdoor activities climbing, hiking, kitting, sup'ing, skiing, and mountain biking (his favorite), and to this day he will make sure you know that he still holds the record for the fastest time in the 8-mile race at the Run of the Charles Sea Kayak Race (in a category he made up so he can always win!) Mikey continues to learn more about the outdoor activities he has come to love while adding a few new ones to this list, especially dual sport dirt bike riding (his new addiction ), and is on pace to smash Tim's record of living with his parents by not moving out until he is 40!

Scott Powers

Scott Powers is an outdoor adventurer and gear junkie who loves making his own gear. He is an active climber, snowboarder, orienteering competitor, and trail runner with multiple ultras under his belt. While not out in the backcountry he is equally at home in front of a sewing machine or in his workshop making outdoor gear for his next big trip. Though much of his time is spent with modern gear in vertical terrain he is equally comfortable living in the forest with primitive gear that he built. Scott is an AMGA certified single pitch instructor who guides for the EMS Climbing School (as Doug’s lackey) and ski patrols at Pat’s Peak (where he keeps Tim in line while uphilling in the morning) in New Hampshire.
