Surf Station: Happy New Year
Happy New Year!
We’re psyched that Tim and Doug’s piece “1927” was featured in the Winter 2019 issue of Wild Northeast. Skiing the Carriage Road on New Hampshire’s Mt. Moosilauke is one of our favorite winter outings, and Tim and Doug’s piece weaves the history of skiing racing on the Carriage Road into a story of their ascent and descent of the mountain. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to grab a copy at your local gear shop. And if you’re not able to find a hard copy, you can get the piece by clicking on the link above or the whole magazine by signing up for a free digital subscription.
Sticking with the skiing theme, Tim and Doug posted a tips piece on goEast for skiers new to the backcountry. They also did a goEast piece on 52 (more) outdoor resolutions for 2019. Check them out.
Here on this site, Mickey Spades has been leading the charge. He posted a great piece on dating apps for the outdoorsy millennials. Then he followed it up with pieces on the mountain biking without a pack and a review of Mosko Moto’s Reckless 10 pack system. He was also the prime mover behind our collaborative piece about our 2018 Gear of the Year. Look for a lot more from Mickey in the near future.
Meanwhile, Doug had some thoughts about Tim’s venture into dog ownership. He asks the question we’ve all been thinking about: what’s up with Tim?
Now to the links.
It seems everyone in the climbing community is talking about the movie Free Solo. While big names like Alex Honnold, Jimmy Chin, and Tommy Caldwell steal the spotlight, many people don’t realize that other photographer in the movie, Mikey Schaefer, is also kind of a badass. Check out this awesome Climbing Magazine profile on him from 2016.
Speaking of Tommy Caldwell, the New York Times ran an interesting article on his garage/gym/office. Needless, to say everyone is a little jealous and thinking about home renovations.
If it seems like Free Solo ruled outdoor media for much of November and December, you’d be correct. We loved this Outside Magazine article on Free Solo director Jimmy Chin’s tips for adventure photography.
With the winter season upon us, thoughts have shifted from sunny rock and dirt trails to deep powder and frozen ice flows. However, this video of mountain biking in New Hampshire had us reconsidering the decision to put the bikes away.
Two blogs had Mickey Spades pretty stoked. One was a mountain biking guide for Stowe Vermont by Southern Shredders, which had him jonesing for mountain biking season again. The other was a piece about a female rider’s plan to cover and follow the 2019 Dakar rally in Peru.
If hiking the Appalachian Trail is in your future, keep an eye on this one. This development, if it happens, is likely to change the nature and character of one segment of the trail.
Happy 2019! We look forward to seeing you on the trails.
