Winter on the Water

Winter is fleeting. Steep ice today is flowing water the next and subzero surf can be cold calm in an instant. But whatever form winter water takes, I’m all over it. Here’s five favorite winter moments that I recently captured with my camera.

Winter Paddling Adventures. Paddling amongst the sea ice on Cape Cod Bay is amazing. Navigating the maze of mini-bergs tests my problem-solving skills while their sheer size and weight astonish me. As I paddle, I’m always on guard for sharp edges, as they will easily slice open my board.

Ice Views. Here I’m looking down as Doug works his way up a mixed line at Quincy Quarry. Bet you didn’t know there was ice at the Quarries.

Park & Play. River surfing isn’t as popular in the east as it is out west. But that’s ok by me; who needs crowds anyway? Winter rains make for great local park and play waves. This shot is from one of my favorites.

Dune Views. The dunes of Cape Cod are so rarely skiable that when there’s snow you have to get on it.

Park & Play x 2. Sensing a theme here? River surfing is my winter sport of choice. If you haven’t tried it yet, you should.
