Winter Paddling Gear
What do you need to go out in the winter, paddling amongst the Cape Cod ice? Here’s my list.
The first thing you need is proper clothing. I like to wear warm insulating layers against my body, like my Patagonia R1 under a micro fleece. Over that I always wear a dry suit. The Stolquist bPod is one of my favorites because it’s a semi-dry suit without a latex neck gasket. Paddling gloves or mittens (which I prefer) and a warm fleece hat are two other essentials that anybody heading out for a winter SUP tour should have on.
While the water is usually calm, winter paddling is not the time to have an epic and there’s some “must have” equipment as well. Obviously you need a SUP and a paddle. I use a Kioloa high visibility paddle and 11′ BIC Cross. I also wear a full PFD like MTI Rescue Jacket and stay attached to my board with a leash. The Cross has large volume that adds a lot of float.
In addition to having the right gear, I recommend leaving a float plan so that someone knows where you are. On top of that, I carry my phone in a waterproof case so that I can make an emergency call or, more likely, feel comfortable whipping it out to snap a few shots of the break-up.
Before you leave shore, make sure to check the tides. I find the ice tour best during mid-tide and I try to avoid off shore winds. And for when you return, stash a bottle of hot drink in the truck to provide some immediate warmth and calories.
