Surf Station Winter 2018
It’s been a busy several weeks. We posted four pieces here, with folks enjoying my rant about My Worst Hike Ever. Over on goEast, we co-authored four more pieces—covering tips for getting ready for backcountry ski season, outdoor podcasts to keep you entertained during the drive to the mountains, 52 goEast trips to help turn your outdoor-themed New Years resolution into a reality, and guidelines for when its time to replace biking, climbing, and hiking equipment—as well as the Alpha Guide to Shoestring Gully (the best moderate ice climb in New Hampshire). Check them out!
Also on goEast, friend-of-The-Whites-Room Ashley Peck offered her latest #revenlations: the best apres ski stretchesand some ideal Valentines Day adventure dates. Both are great (although I’m still wondering how she got Tim to pose for those photos).
In the “we’re jealous we didn’t write it category,” goEast also published an outstanding Alpha Guide recently on skiing in Tuckerman Ravine. It’s a great resource, and if you are planning on getting in some of the East Coast’s premier backcountry skiing, make sure to check it out before you head out.
Speaking of skiing, we ended up at Mt. Moosilauke last weekend due to iffy weather and high avalanche danger in the ravines. And despite not being our “first” choice, it delivered. The snow was deep, the skiing was great, and it was certainly my best day of season. Mickey Spades, who wanted to join us, missed yet another POW day, although this time he had a good excuse: winning his group at the Wicked Nor’Eastah Fat Bike race at Borderland. (Still, he won’t be badass until he starts racing in the professional category. He’s too fast not to be!)
Finally, there’s been a lot on the interwebs lately about the White Mountains. My recent favorite was a Wild Northeast article on the fastest known time on the White Mountain Hut Traverse, an awesome, but brutal, trail run linking the eight huts in the Whites. Enjoy!
