Surf Station: Spring 2019
Spring is here. Mickey Spades has been out on his dual sport riding the Puppy Dog Trail, Luke’s been snapping some awesome rock climbing photos, and I’ve even been out on my mountain bike, training for an upcoming bikepacking trip. If you missed any of these pieces the first time, be sure to check them out now.
Over on goEast, Tim and I posted several spring-ish pieces. The first was our now-annual “Don’t Be A Fool”-themed piece for April Fools Day. The second was an April showers deep dive on rain shells. The third looked at the possibility of changes to the NH 48 list, something many peakbaggers are probably thinking about as they dust off their hiking boots this Spring. The last was A Dirtbag’s Guide to the KonMari Method.
Finally, Tim had a few other outdoor pieces published recently. For the Cascade Mountain Tech blog, he did a great piece about enjoying the end of ski season. (My appearance in the pics in that piece, incidentally, got me a ration of shit from Spades; but the fact is that he’s just jealous that he missed out on a great day skiing Hale). The Backcountry Edge also recently posted two pieces that Tim wrote, one on headlamps for trail running and the other about selecting a day pack. Give ’em a click!
Now to the links.
Friend of The Whites Room Scott Powers is leading a series of classes for the Boston Outdoor School this Spring. Most of them focus on orienteering and outdoor navigation. Sign up for one if that’s something you want to brush up on.
Based on their tweets, it looks like Tim and Ashley enjoyed this advice for first-time dog owners. I read up until the part where the writer recommended that dog owners get their dog a bandanna to make them “look friendlier.” That’s where the author lost me; my parents’ dog always appreciated when I used to take her bandanna off after she came home from the groomer. She knew how dumb it looked.
From the Adventure Journal, we all really enjoyed this piece about a couple of skiers trying to start an uphill only resort. It’s an awesome concept; I hope it works out.
Finally, if you’re like me and struggling to cope with the end of winter, here’s some tips from Powder Magazine. Ski season can’t roll around soon enough!
