Tim and Doug's 2022 GoEast Recap

Tim and Doug's 2022 GoEast Recap

As we roll into 2023, we wanted to look back at some of our favorite pieces that we did for goEast in 2022. To determine our favorites, we created a simple ranking system. First we individually ranked our top 5 favorites of our 41 total goEast pieces, with our individual favorite getting 5 points, our second favorite getting four points, and so on down the line. Second, we combined our rankings to determine our top 5. After that we gave out Honorable Mention awards.

Without further ado, here’s our overall top 5:

Number 5: Dogtown: A Ghost Town Alive With Outdoor Opportunities (3 points: Tim’s Ranking: NR; Doug’s Ranking: 3)

Dogtown: A Ghost Town Alive With Outdoor Opportunities

Why: Such a weird place, but the bouldering was actually pretty fun. We just wish there was a little more of it … or at least that it was easier to find.

Number 4: What's Wrong With an Infinite Storm (3 points: Tim’s Ranking: 3; Doug’s Ranking: NR)

Opinion: What’s Wrong with “Infinite Storm”?

Why: An awful movie about the Whites made for an article Tim was born to write—it's basically a list of gripes while working in references to two terrible, yet awesome, climbing movies—Vertical Limit and Cliffhanger.

Number 3: Explore Like A Local Burke: (5 points: Tim’s Ranking: 1; Doug’s Ranking: NR)

Explore Like a Local: Adventure and Relax in Burke

Why: A photo is worth 1,000 words and, for that reason, Tim’s top ranking. He still can't believe goEast published the photo of Ashley eating ice cream. And Ashley still can't believe he submitted the photo of her eating ice cream.

Number 2: Vose Spur and Early Ascents of Mount Carrigain (6 points: Tim’s Ranking: 4; Doug’s Ranking: 2)

Vose Spur and Early Ascents of Mount Carrigain

Why: New-to-us terrain, stellar views, a cool slide, smooth research and writing, and the first piece to make both of our lists easily makes this one our No. 2 article for 2022.

Number 1: Alpha Guide: Climb the West Chimney of The Eaglet (9 points: Tim’s Ranking: 2; Doug’s Ranking: 1)

Alpha Guide: Climb the West Chimney of the Eaglet

Why: The Eaglet takes the roses because it remains one of the best trips in the Northeast and we had a fantastic day with buds Ashley and Scott climbing as two parties of two. Sure the second pitch chimney is a thorn, but the views from atop the pinnacle make it all worthwhile.

With our combined Top 5 out of the way, here are a few final honorable mention awards:

The Single Best Phrase Award for 2022 goes to Tim’s gem about “impromptu band concerts” in 7 Reasons Everybody Needs an Adventure Blanket.

The This One Was a Little Late Award for 2022 goes to our still-forthcoming article about rock climbing on the Boott Spur’s buttresses. It was only due in July.

Finally, the We Love Opinion Pieces for 2022 gets split between two pieces—Yield to Fun: Why Descending Mountain Bikers Should Go First and Opinion: Dawn Patrol is Better on a Bike. Opinion pieces are always fun and these articles are pretty unique.

That wraps up our 2022 goEast writing. You can see our entire goEast library here. And don’t miss our goEast-related appearance on the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue Podcast here
